MATETIC WINERY, VALPARAISO

What a fantastic party we were invited to! The ship sponsored an exclusive Classy Country Fair at "one of the most exciting and swish wineries in Chile" according to Frommer.

We were greeted by mounted Chilean huasos (ranch hands), followed by a group of children dressed in typical country dress who presented each lady with a flower and then escorted us to the terrace area for a cocktail reception. The pisco sours were delicious (even in the hot afternoon sun!) and the wine flowed freely as we were entertained by a typical Folkloric group playing and dancing traditional dances. Throughout the beautiful gardens and terrace were cotton candy, peanut, and candy apple stands, an old time photographer, an organ grinder with a parrot instead of a monkey, a chinchinero (mulit-drum-and-cymbal player) and llamas and sheep.

We were not taken on a tour of their gravity-flow winery which is sunken into a sloping hill, but sampled their excellent sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and pinot noir. All this wonderful feast for the eyes was followed by a feast for the taste buds as we enjoyed a sumptuous dinner in their gazebo on the pond.

What a magical afternoon!
